Sydney Sweeney, acclaimed for her roles in HBO’s Euphoria and The White Lotus, has been candid about her stance on filming nude scenes. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she addressed the industry’s perception of actresses who participate in such scenes, stating, “I have no problems with those scenes, and I won’t stop doing them.” She emphasized the need for more open discussions about the assumptions made regarding actors in these situations.
Sweeney also highlighted the double standards prevalent in Hollywood concerning on-screen nudity. She observed that while male actors often receive accolades for roles involving nudity, women are frequently subjected to degradation for similar performances. “There are hour-long compilations of world-famous male actors with nude scenes who win Oscars and get praised for that work. But the moment a woman does it, it degrades them,” she remarked in an interview with Cosmopolitan.
To challenge these biases and gain more creative control, Sweeney launched her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films. This venture allows her to influence the narratives and representations within her projects, aiming to shift industry perspectives on female actors and on-screen nudity.
Despite her comfort with such scenes, Sweeney has encountered personal challenges. She shared that her father and grandfather once turned off the television upon witnessing her explicit scenes in Euphoria. However, she continues to receive unwavering support from her grandmother, who even accompanies her to film sets.
Through her openness and proactive approach, Sydney Sweeney is advocating for a more nuanced and respectful dialogue about on-screen nudity, striving to dismantle the double standards that have long existed in Hollywood.
