Prince Harry made awkward ‘ignore’ gesture the last time he faced Prince William – expert
Prince Harry’s feud with his older brother Prince William continues and it has almost been a year since they were last seen together at the same public event – their father King Charles’ Coronation
Their bitter feud has seen Princes William and Harry go from seemingly tight brothers to barely on speaking terms.
The pair had once appeared inseperable during their younger years but as they grew older, the cracks in their relationship began to appear, with Harry ultimately choosing a life away from royal duties with wife Meghan Markle four years ago. The brothers’ relationship seemingly hit a flashpoint early last year when Harry’s memoir was released, which included claims William physically attacked him.
After the release of the book, the pair have only been at the same public event once, their father King Charles’ Coronation almost one year ago – and according to a body language expert Harry made an awkward “ignore” gesture as he got first glimpse of William at the event.
Harry turned up at Westminster Abbey on May 6 last year for the service after previously announcing he would be attending the historic event without wife Meghan, who stayed behind in the US with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The Duke of Sussex took his seat in the third row for the crowning, two rows behind his brother, the Prince of Wales.
Wearing medals pinned to his suit jacket, he chatted to his cousin Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi as he entered Westminster Abbey in the drizzling rain. But as William and his Kate proceeded to their seats, Harry caught sight of his brother, and according to body language expert Judi James, he performed an “ignore” gesture.
She told the Mirror: “Harry performed what looked like an oddly-times act of ignore or attention diversion as his father, brother and sister-in-law walked in a procession in front of him. Harry had been chatting animatedly to Edoardo, jerking a thumb over his shoulder at one point, sharing a giggling laugh that seemed to involve his tongue placed between his teeth, and then doing a mutual, mirrored eye gaze with a matching lip clamp smile to Edo that seemed to signal mutual sympathy or empathy.
“Harry was looking up as Charles, William and Kate arrived to walk past but after looking at his father, Harry turned his head to speak to Eduardo again in a very odd way at a crucial point in the ceremony when all eyes and attention were on Charles and William’s arrival.”
The encounter appears to be the last time the brothers were seen at the same event in public as their rift rumbles on. Of course, Harry now lives in California, meaning opportunities to meet up with his family are limited. However, when King Charles announced his cancer diagnosis in February, Harry rushed to London to spend time with him – though he did not meet with his brother.
Next month, Harry is believed to be returning to the UK again for an event at St Paul’s Cathedral in London to mark 10 years of his Invictus Games for injured service personnel. It’s unclear if he would use a trip to the UK to catch up with his family.
Speaking to US TV back in February, the Duke of Sussex said he was told the news by the King himself about his cancer and jumped on a plane straight away to see him. He said he felt lucky to have been able to visit his dad following the diagnosis. and added: “Look I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him I’m grateful for that.” He added:: “I’ve got other trips planned that will take me through the UK, or back to the UK, and so I’ll stop in and see my family as much as I can.”
