According to new findings obtained by US media, the 20-year-old college student crashed her car into a fence and a sign in the Hamptons during the July Fourth weekend – and fled the scene, only to leave behind her number plate.

Sources said that the plate had fallen off her Jeep Wrangler as she crashed, allowing the police to recover it and identify Romy.

US media reports that Romy has been issued a summons for leaving the scene of the accident and adds that lawyer Edward Burke Jr – who’s previously worked with celeb clients such as Justin Timberlake – is “currently involved in the case and resolving this for Ms. Lauer”.

Romy is the eldest daughter of former Today show host Matt Lauer and his ex-wife, Annette Roque. They also share Jack, 23, and Thijs, 17.

Per Hello!, the couple split after Matt Lauer was fired from NBC after allegations of sexual assault in the workplace were made against him. Their divorce was finalised in 2019.
As seen on her LinkedIn, Romy is currently a student at the University of Miami. She is reportedly studying to get a degree in general finance and is set to graduate in May 2026. Her LinkedIn profile states that she is bilingual: she can speak English and Dutch.

As seen on her Instagram page, she is dating Spanish tennis player Antonio Prat, who is also a student at the University of Miami. They regularly share photos together on their social media accounts, and have gone on couple trips across the globe, from Amsterdam to San Sebastian.

Like her mum, Lauer is an equestrian, as seen on her Instagram. In 2019, she posted photos of herself showjumping. “Couldn’t have asked for a better Hampton classic. Bonaparte wins 6 out of 9 classes and Haminka places very well for her first time in the hunter ring,” she wrote in her caption. She even has a dedicated Instagram page for her love of the sport.

Lauer is also very active on TikTok, where she boasts 30,000 followers. She has been described as living a “privileged” and seemingly “carefree” lifestyle, sharing countless posts of herself at parties, wearing designer clothes, and going on lavish holidays and yachts with her friends and boyfriend.

It appears Matt does still have a good relationship with his children, and has even danced and lip synced on his daughter Romy’s TikTok videos in the past.

A source told People in 2022 that the disgraced host has “a good relationship with his children and sees them often” and that “they are a priority in his life”.

Lauer, a household name in the US, was fired as host of the Today show after damning sexual misconduct allegations. Per People, Lauer faced even more complaints after the initial accusation, with more women coming forward and reporting multiple accounts of alleged misconduct. The formerly beloved TV personality denied many of the accusations, calling them “untrue or mischaracterised”. He admitted to extramarital affairs – as he was married to his then wife, model Annette Roque, at the time – but insisted they were consensual.
