HISTORIC: Boston Celtics Set New Record with $6.1 Billion Sale

In a historic move, the Boston Celtics have been sold for a record-breaking $6.1 billion, marking the highest sale price for any professional sports team in North American history.
The purchasing group is led by William Chisholm, co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm based in California. Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics fan, expressed his deep connection to the team, stating, “I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston—the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country.”
This monumental sale surpasses the previous record set in 2023 when the NFL’s Washington Commanders were sold for $6.05 billion. It also eclipses the NBA’s prior record of $4 billion for the Phoenix Suns in 2022.
The Celtics, under the ownership of Boston Basketball Partners LLC led by Wyc Grousbeck since 2002, have enjoyed significant success, including multiple NBA championships. Grousbeck, who acquired the team for $360 million, will continue as the team’s CEO and governor until the end of the 2027-2028 season, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.
Chisholm’s acquisition reflects the soaring valuations of sports franchises, driven by lucrative media rights deals and the global appeal of teams like the Celtics. His deep-rooted passion for the team and commitment to maintaining its legacy have been well-received by fans and the broader NBA community.
As the Celtics continue their pursuit of excellence on the court, this sale marks a new chapter in the storied franchise’s history, blending a rich heritage with forward-looking ownership committed to sustaining the team’s competitive edge and community involvement.
