Ed Kelce wasn’t exactly a Swiftie upon meeting her. Jason and Travis Kelce’s father recalls his initial interaction with Taylor Swift, and admits that he couldn’t put a name to a face at first.
Ed met Travis’ girlfriend before a Kansas City Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, and explains on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland that he had a tough time placing her.
“When Travis has a lot of friends coming into town to the game, everyone meets at his house, although he’s not there. Taylor walks in with a security guy, and I look at her, and I say [to my girlfriend], ‘Oh my god, I know this kid, but I don’t know what her name is,'” he confesses. “Jeez, you know, like a real idiot. And [my girlfriend] says, ‘You don’t know her? This is Taylor Swift, you idiot.'”
Ed knows her name now, and shares how his son’s new level of fame has trickled down to the rest of the family — thanks to his girlfriend.
“There are eyes on you every place you go. It’s funny because last year, [Jason and Travis’ mom] Donna [Kelce] and I were shown on TV screens, and we had some articles that were done,” he says, remembering when both Jason and Travis were playing against each other in the Super Bowl. “…More people recognize us since [Travis] started dating Taylor, though. I’ll be in the grocery store, somebody will smile and say, ‘Hey!’ …And I have no idea who they are. That has certainly picked up and become more frequent by a long shot than the before Taylor days.”
One thing’s for certain, Ed is a Swiftie now! “I don’t know that Taylor is out there trying to make money, trying to build this huge empire,” he says in defense of the 34-year-old singer. “I think she’s out there following her passion, doing what she knows and what she enjoys, and people are just throwing money at her, you know what I mean.”
In October, ET spoke with Ed and he shared what impressed him most about Swift.
“She’s very down to earth, very genuine,” he shared. “She doesn’t put on airs or anything like that…. The ‘girl next door’ is an overused term, but she really is.”
Ed added, “I mean, she’s been, you know, performing for huge crowds for over half her life. And for someone to be so grounded, and so normal- I mean, I hate to use that word. But other people aren’t.”
