Now that it’s fall, we’re taking time to reflect on the whirlwind events of the past summer, and upon looking back, it’s clear there was no summer star bigger than rapper Snoop Dogg. His role in the Paris Olympics 2024 coverage will truly never be topped and made the games one of the most memorable for fans.

And now that it’s fall, he’s continuing to star front and center with his newest endeavor as a coach for the upcoming season 26 of The Voice alongside newcomer Michael Bublé and veteran coaches Gwen Stefani and Reba McEntire.

But what do we really know about the California singer/songwriter, other than the fact that he knows how to entertain a crowd and create great music? Well to start, he’s been married to his wife for over 20 years. His personal life might remain pretty off-the-radar compared to other high-profile celebrities, but there’s a lot of history behind the “Drop It Like Its Hot” singer’s relationship. Eager to learn more? Here’s everything we know about his decades-spanning love story that he keeps out of the spotlight

Snoop, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., first met Shante Broadus at Long Beach’s Polytechnic High School in California. Although the year they met isn’t clear, according to photos from her Instagram, the high school sweethearts attended prom together before graduating in 1989. On the DJ Suss One radio show, he said he worked hard to woo his now wife of 20 years. “I had to go over there and date her for, like, four months before I was able to kiss her,” he said. “I had to call her on the phone. I had to write love letters.”

It was only three years later, in 1992, that Snoop would be discovered by rapper Dr. Dre and make his way onto the music scene.

Almost 10 years later, on June 14, 1997, the couple were married at The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina Del Rey, California. Prior to the marriage, they had already welcomed their first son, Cordé Broadus, 30, and a few months before their wedding in 1997 they welcomed their second, Cordell Broadus, 27. His daughter Cori Broadus, 25, was born in June 1999. He also shares son Julian Corrie Broadus, 26, with a woman named Laurie Helmond.

The couple renewed their vows in a surprise ceremony Snoop planned for Shante at singer Charlie Wilson’s ranch on January 12, 2006, in front of 200 guests. This came after a rough patch in 2004 when Snoop filed for divorce over “irreconcilable differences,” with the couple later reuniting. According to E! News, he attributed it to the fame of his career getting in the way of his relationship with his wife. “This music industry is a mother, man, and it’ll take your vision and blur it, ” he said. “But God is good, so I understand that I need my wife and my kids in my life — so I threw the papers away.”

And based off Shante’s Instagram post of the couple in similar pink and white sweatsuits celebrating their most recent anniversary with the caption, “#TwentySeven 💙💙,” the relationship has been going strong since. In fact, in June 2021, she officially became his manager, helping expand and oversee “partnership deals across the cannabis, spirits, gaming, music, brand partnerships, touring, licensing and TV/film space,” according to PR Newswire. She has had her own music management company, Boss Lady Entertainment, since 2003.

They’ve even become grandparents to not one but seven grandchildren — and Snoop has shared that they are his “everything.”

“My grandkids are my everything because they all individually get a piece of my heart and they’re different,” he revealed to People this past June. “My grandpa was my best friend and for me to be that for my grandkids is showing that I actually did well and I was able to outlive the circumstances.”

If there’s one thing Snoop wants to make clear, it’s that Shante certainly balances him out and knows him better than anyone. “She understands me,” the 52-year-old told People earlier this month. “She’s a great mother, a tremendous grandmother, an excellent wife and a great friend. . . The good to my bad is her.”
