Michigan Survives Rutgers Scare After Costly Missed Field Goals in Tight Road Victory

The Wolverines escaped with a 28–21 victory over Rutgers, but missed field goals and defensive lapses turned what appeared to be a comfortable afternoon into a tense battle that went down to the wire.

Michigan secured a hard-fought 28–21 victory over Rutgers on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. However, the Wolverines’ struggles to capitalize on scoring opportunities nearly cost them the game after Rutgers mounted a determined comeback.

The victory improved Michigan’s record to 5–3 overall and 2–3 in Big Ten conference play, giving the team its first road win of the season. Despite the positive result, the Wolverines left the field with questions about their consistency, particularly after missing two field-goal attempts that could have helped them establish a more comfortable lead.

Michigan Starts Strong Before Rutgers Responds

Michigan appeared to be in control during the opening stages of the contest. Quarterback Tommy Carr led an impressive 92-yard opening drive, connecting with JJ Buchanan for a six-yard touchdown that gave the Wolverines an early advantage.

Michigan extended its lead to 14–3 in the second quarter when running back Jordan Marshall scored on a two-yard touchdown run.

However, Rutgers refused to surrender. Quarterback AJ Surace connected with Jourdin Houston on an explosive 80-yard touchdown pass, cutting into Michigan’s advantage and energizing the home crowd.

Rutgers added a field goal before halftime, leaving Michigan with a narrow 14–13 lead heading into the break. What initially looked like a potentially comfortable victory had quickly developed into a closely contested matchup.

Missed Field Goals Give Rutgers Hope

One of the most frustrating aspects of Michigan’s performance was its inability to convert field-goal opportunities.

Kicker Trey Butkowski missed two attempts, including a 35-yard effort in the third quarter. Those missed opportunities prevented the Wolverines from putting additional points on the scoreboard and allowed Rutgers to remain within striking distance.

Although Michigan continued to move the ball effectively, its failure to capitalize on scoring chances kept the contest more competitive than necessary.

The missed kicks became particularly significant as Rutgers continued searching for a way back into the game. With Michigan unable to create a decisive cushion, the Scarlet Knights remained confident that they could turn the contest around.

Rutgers Mounts a Stunning Comeback

Michigan regained some breathing room in the third quarter when Carr scored on a 15-yard touchdown run, extending the Wolverines’ lead to 21–13.

The Michigan defense initially appeared to have regained control, limiting Rutgers’ offensive production and forcing consecutive three-and-out possessions.

However, Rutgers delivered another major blow in the fourth quarter.

Running back Antwan Raymond broke free for a spectacular 54-yard run, putting the Scarlet Knights in an excellent position to score. Clay Thevenin subsequently powered into the end zone on a one-yard touchdown run.

Rutgers then converted a two-point attempt, tying the game at 21–21 with 11 minutes and 43 seconds remaining.

Suddenly, Michigan’s advantage had disappeared, and the Wolverines faced the possibility of suffering a disappointing defeat on the road.

Tommy Carr Delivers When Michigan Needs Him Most

With the game tied and pressure mounting, Carr stepped up to deliver the decisive moment.

Michigan orchestrated a 75-yard drive, methodically moving down the field before Carr completed the possession with a nine-yard touchdown run.

The score came with 4 minutes and 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, restoring Michigan’s lead to 28–21.

Rutgers had another opportunity to respond, but Michigan’s defense forced the Scarlet Knights to punt. The Wolverines subsequently managed the remaining time, using crucial first-down conversions to prevent Rutgers from getting the ball back for another meaningful scoring opportunity.

Carr’s performance proved decisive. He completed 22 of 27 passes for 266 yards, threw one touchdown pass and rushed for two touchdowns. He also recorded 54 rushing yards, demonstrating his ability to contribute both through the air and on the ground.

Michigan Wins, but Questions Remain

Despite the victory, Michigan’s performance highlighted areas that will require attention as the season continues.

The Wolverines accumulated 427 total offensive yards and converted 12 of 16 third-down opportunities. Nevertheless, their missed field goals, defensive breakdowns and 90 penalty yards prevented them from controlling the contest as convincingly as their offensive production might suggest.

Rutgers, meanwhile, showed resilience by recovering from an 11-point deficit and finding a way to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

The defeat dropped the Scarlet Knights to 2–6 overall and 1–4 in conference play, but their second-half fight demonstrated their ability to challenge Michigan when opportunities arose.

For the Wolverines, the result ultimately mattered most. They escaped with a seven-point victory and ended their wait for a road win this season.

What Comes Next?

Michigan will turn its attention to its upcoming rivalry matchup against Michigan State on November 7, 2026. The Wolverines will be hoping to build on their victory while addressing the mistakes that allowed Rutgers to threaten their lead.

Saturday’s contest offered a valuable lesson: missed scoring opportunities and defensive lapses can quickly transform a seemingly comfortable game into a dangerous situation.

Michigan got the result it wanted, but if the Wolverines hope to build momentum for the remainder of the season, they will need to become more consistent on both sides of the ball.

For now, the Wolverines can celebrate a hard-earned victory, while Rutgers is left wondering what might have happened had Michigan’s missed opportunities translated into an even closer finish.
