Beef squashed: Josh Allen addresses his viral postgame talk with Patrick Mahomes

Josh Allen was caught in the crossfire of the controversial ending to Sunday’s Bills-Chiefs game in Kansas City. The Buffalo quarterback was given the brush-off by Patrick Mahomes after time expired, with cameras capturing Mahomes complaining about an offensive offsides penalty that negated a Chiefs touchdown late in the fourth quarter. While Mahomes has since talked about what happened, fans and analysts had yet to hear from Allen in the wake of Sunday’s events.

That all changed Wednesday, when Allen met with reporters at the Bills’ facility in Orchard Park, New York. The signal-caller finally had a chance to discuss the controversy behind his team’s 20-17 win at Arrowhead Stadium — and it seems like all is well between the two stars

Allen: Mahomes is the ultimate competitor

Allen on Wednesday told reporters that Mahomes reached out to him following Sunday’s game — and the Kansas City quarterback did what he told a local radio station he would.

“I’m just like, ‘It’s football; it’s a game of emotion,'” Allen said. “I know he didn’t mean anything by it.”

Allen’s gracious acceptance of Mahomes’ apology belied the intense nature of their Sunday showdown. The two quarterbacks have split six all-time meetings, and their on-field rivalry has developed into one of the NFL’s best. As Allen explained, that’s partially due to Mahomes’ fiery personality and competitiveness.

“I know the cameras kind of caught the last few seconds of what we were talking about,” Allen said Wednesday. “He’s an ultimate competitor. He wants to win. That’s why he is who he is.”

Sunday’s win in Kansas City’s backyard brought Buffalo’s record to 7-6 — one of six AFC teams with that exact win-loss mark. The cramped playoff picture isn’t doing the Bills any favors — nor is a week 15 matchup against the red-hot Dallas Cowboys — but with their individual talent, it’s hard to say with any certainty that Buffalo will miss the playoffs.

However, the Bills face long odds to return to the postseason, with PlayoffStatus assigning Allen, Stefon Diggs, and company just a 28 percent chance to make the playoffs as a wild-card team. Buffalo will need a good showing against Dallas on Sunday before turning its attention to winnable contests against the Los Angeles Chargers and the New England Patriots.
